Six Easy Steps to Overcome the Fear of Public Speaking
Because public speaking can be fearful, I want to share my strategy to overcome your fear of speaking.
1. Embrace your message. Having a business which honors your talents creates opportunities. Determine what service you are delivering. Identify how your service, or product, improves the lives of your ideal client. Create the key points or steps for your service. Become extremely familiar with them. Base your business on your steps or key points. Everything you speak and write about will highlight these key points. You will become very familiar with them.
2. Join Toastmasters. It works. This group is dedicated to helping you get over those jitters and become comfortable with delivering your message. Their program is designed for success. It is like dipping your toes in the water to test the temperature. The best part is you get to set the pace as to how fast, or slow, you want to go through the process. By practicing in front of others, whether a formal speech or a quick response, you will learn so much. Practice. Practice. Practice.
3. Be aware of your mindset. When you focus on how scary it is being in front of an audience and how nervous you feel, you will continue to resist getting up and in front of others. You become so tuned into the fear, you will actually make yourself even more anxious. Beginning speakers perceive the audience as “them” against me. Well that does not help. As you realize what you are doing, choose to change your perception from viewing the audience as judgmental to people you can develop rapport with. Find one or two friendly faces in the audience. This change from hostile to friendly was significant.
4. Clear the energy. We all have work to do. As an Emotional Freedom Techniques practitioner, I have a very effective tool I use to help easily clear blocks with public speaking. While sitting at a Toastmasters meeting, or preparing for a presentation, you can discreetly be tapping on your wrist to stay focused, keeping yourself centered and calm. As you practice your speech at home, continue tapping for any nervousness, doubt or fear which arises. Combining Toastmasters with EFT helps clear the blocks at a faster rate than Toastmasters alone.
5. Start small. When you find yourself ready to speak there are many ways to take the plunge, you have options. Have your first talk be small, intimate and comfortable. Talk about something you are very familiar with. Decide to do your first presentation in front of a small group in a familiar setting. If your first speaking engagement is to a larger audience, do a dry-run. Practice it with a small supportive group of colleagues.
6. Breath. When you become nervous you might forget to breath. Taking long, deep breaths will help you remain calmer and more focused than shallow breaths. How you breathe also affects how far your voice will be projected. Your breathe has the ability to relax you.
The fear of public speaking can be transformed. Although it might have been overwhelming just thinking about it, or waiting for your turn, it does not have to remain that way.

The one thing many entrepreneurs avoid is possibly the one thing most effective for growing your practice. I know it is, by far, the biggest fear most of us have. In fact, people will go to great lengths to avoid it.
Public speaking. That is the best way to reach the most people in the shortest amount of time. It is very cost effective. You are maximizing your time by speaking in front of many instead of one. Being a speaker automatically places you as an expert.
I have heard all the excuses to avoid being in front of a group of people. The thought of standing before a group of peers can create an aerobic heartbeat without ever having to leave your seat. It can feel awful.
Once, however, you make the decision to create your own practice everything can change. You know the benefits of speaking. As you make a commitment to grow your business, you embrace a “no-excuses” approach. What you had previously spent many years avoiding, is the first thing you will need to tackle.
The fear is not about speaking in public. People speak all the time. It is about the thoughts you have attached to public speaking. Once you clear those thoughts, replacing them with new ones, it will begin to change. By doing nothing you will continue to be hostage to those thoughts, spending energy avoiding doing the one thing which can have a significant impact on your business.

Weeding Out the Social Networking Excuses
The answers are available
Just as there are many reasons not to market your business, there are just as many reasons to progress despite the fears.
My social networking and public speaking skills were acquired. When I first began speaking, I would have an aerobic heartbeat just about the thought of being onstage or in front of a group. With support, practice and visualization, I overcame that block. By the way, I also used the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to help clear the energy blocks.
There are so many resources available for teaching you about the finer points of public speaking and networking, online as well as face-to-face. Toastmasters and networking meetings were a great resource for me. I even worked with a coach to fine tune my presentation and an EFT Practitioner to clear my remaining apprehension.
Turning a negative into a positive
Once the core issues are resolved, the other things which appear to have been issues will resolve themselves easily. The goal is to turn a negative into a positive. Instead of trying to get away from a problem, consider how it would be different if you decided to move toward a solution. The action steps might not change, but your perception will and that is powerful.
I knew I wanted to begin presenting at conferences. There are many parts to public speaking and your anxiety might be about a different aspect of it than mine. So the first step is to figure out which part has the most anxiety for you. I had two parts, right before going up to present and then being in front of an audience.
Examining my thoughts about being in front of an audience was powerful. I realized I perceived the audience as hostile. Me against them. I was separated from them and “on the outside.” My solution was to find a way to connect with the audience. Once I was able to imagine a connection and use my skills to gain rapport, the anxiety began to slip away.
Activity: Find one reason you are hesitant to network and speak. Now ask yourself “why”. Each time you write something down, ask yourself “why.” Do that at least five times. It might sound tedious, but it will help you get beyond the obvious surface reason. The hesitancy for stepping out and social networking might not be what you think it is.
Lining Up Pricing and Value for Business Success – Part 2
So what makes one person motivated to charge for her services, making a nice, comfortable living, versus someone else who is giving away their education, information and time? Your underlying beliefs affect your decisions. In a nutshell, that is it. Sounds simple, but not always easy.
The goal is to have your beliefs, feelings and actions align. You want to identify, then change, the beliefs and thoughts which keep you stuck where you are. This is like gardening. If you were to weed your garden, you wouldn’t just pull the part of the weed you can see above the surface. You dig down and yank out the root as well to prevent the weed from returning.
When something happens to you there is a need to make sense of the experience. You provide meaning to it, beginning to create a story to explain the experience. We all do this. Life circumstances change over time, but the meaning you created usually continues to remain unchanged. This contributes to sabotage, avoidance, overwhelm and perfectionism.
Well, you might need to dig around and figure out where your belief originated. What happened in your life, or what message did you hear repeatedly, about money, wealth and success that is preventing you from growing your business? Identify where it began. Once you change the meaning around the original experience, or message, you create an opportunity to overcome your current barriers for business success.
This process does not have to be a long, painful struggle working through all of your old stuff. You don’t need to re-traumatize yourself with events you experienced when you were younger. You cannot change what happened to you, but you are able to change how you perceive something. That is significant. Changing the perception is powerful. By releasing the old meaning, then creating a new one which is more appropriate for your current goals, you are making a correction.
Jane and I identified her belief concerning payment for her services. As a child she learned her parents valued charity and service work more than a job. Her father always talked about the struggle of making ends meet. He worked long, hard hours and would be traveling for extended periods of time to support the family. Her mother, however, stayed home and did a lot of volunteer work. She spoke often about the importance of charity and volunteer work being an expectation.
Jane created meaning around these messages. She knew the importance of being charitable. She also learned about the struggle to make ends meet. Subconsciously, she created a business where she gave away much of her services and she was earning just enough to maintain her practice.
Together, Jane and I developed new meaning to business operations. We explored the benefit her clients received from working with her. Because she had a purpose-based practice, her work was energizing and easy. She was a natural healer. Work did not have to be a struggle for her. Her clients experienced amazing results quickly.
Next we focused on aligning her energy concerning her clients paying her. We used the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to quickly clear the resistance concerning self worth and money. Once her thoughts and emotions were aligned we focused on strategy. We created new rates, established a system for payment and connected a portion of her profits to a charity. Jane was excited about the possibilities, eager to implement the plan.
Clearing the mindset obstacles is primary for business success. Create your strong foundation before you can build up. So often, you will experience a disconnect between where you are now and where you want to be. Finding the core beliefs holding you back are typically not what you think they are. Change will happen more quickly when you work with a coach who has a fresh perspective. Others are able to see things, you are unable to see yourself. The shift in mindset is transformative. Opportunities to grow you business will begin to appear.
Activity:
Do you find you have set goals for yourself, but progress seems to be slow? Explore your mindset and your beliefs preventing you from reaching your goals. Write down anything contributing to sabotage, resistance or overwhelm concerning your goals. Next see if you can figure out where your belief came from. See if it is possible to find a new meaning for that circumstance. Try out the new meaning and see how it feels. The key is to find a new belief which supports your goals for business success.

Your Fears Affect Business Growth – Part 1
What is holding you back?
Earlier today I was talking with a client about her business. She has so much to offer her clients. In fact, Denise has been steadily building her business, adding onto her team. Sounds great, right? On the outside everything looks like she is gearing up for success. Well during our coaching call Denise admits letting opportunities to build her business pass her by. She has been procrastinating and feeling off of her game, but can’t put her finger on the real reason. She has sought out several healers and supports trying to figure it all out. She has a lot of support, but continued to be plagued with avoidance.
F.E.A.R.
F.E.A.R. is false evidence appearing real. Once Denise and I began talking, I asked her a series of questions. We uncovered the reason for resistance quickly during our call. In fact, the core issue was so far removed from what she expected she denied it at first. Denise knew it was right, however, when she was able to feel that burden in her body begin to melt away. What she had spent several weeks trying to figure out, without any success, we were able to pinpoint in a matter of minutes. It was that quick.
Typically the block is not what you usually think it is. Your reality is based upon your experiences and history. How you interpret events affect your beliefs. Beliefs are ways of giving meaning to something. We all do it. Then later in life when something similar occurs, or we get triggered, one of these beliefs gets activated. Your unconscious mind is powerful. You might not even be aware this is occurring, but you know something just is not right. The activation process will affect how you act or react.
Denise is a very logical person. She loves to think things through and find
solutions where others see problems. She figured there was a logical reason for her actions. Beliefs, particularly fears, are not based upon reality. This is part of the reason getting to the bottom of something on your own can be so difficult. Changing perspective is possible, but difficult. It is like looking for the needle in the haystack when the needle has been right in front of you this whole time.
Now that we knew the real reason for her avoidance, we were able to clear the energy block. By the way, Denise’s block was about money and wealth. She wasn’t afraid of success. Instead she was concerned about what would happen to her if she became too successful and began having a lot of money. She was fearful of becoming a self-centered, shallow person. More importantly, she was concerned this would affect her relationship with her husband and children.
There is always more than one way of looking at something. Denise was ready to change her perception about success and wealth. People she loved very much were unable to give her the support she needed due to their own inadequacies. At a young age she connected having money with becoming shallow and emotionally unavailable. Love for possessions would replace relationships. We used the Emotional Freedom Techniques to clear the blocks to money and wealth, focusing on the fact that she would not all of a sudden become a shallow, self-centered person.

When making a decision to take a stand and strive toward a big goal, it is uncomfortable. You will be stepping out of your comfort zone. You have already done this before. Think about a time when you were determined to do or have something. Nothing was going to stop you. You were committed. Tap into that determination to help you reach your next business goal. It is possible. When your mindset is geared for success, you will be focusing on the solutions instead of the problems.
We all have been at that place before when we have set a BIG goal and then we all of a sudden stop. Procrastination, avoidance and busy work prevent you from taking the next step to reach your goal.
